The case involved a visit to North Coast Hospital earlier in the week before the lockdown, which was related to an unrelated condition.
It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.
The hospital’s emergency department and short-stay surgical unit have been closed, said Dr. Ashley Bloomfield, director general of health.
He said the District Health Board has taken immediate action to close the North Shore Hospital Emergency Department and Short Stay Surgical Unit for new admissions.
“There is a referral to other hospital EDs as the District Health Board contacts staff and patients this morning who may have been exposed to Covid 19.”
Bloomfield said that given the incubation period of the virus, health officials have speculated that the man may have been infected when he was admitted to North Shore Hospital.
Affected staff are being mobilized and advised to follow public health advice, while potentially existing patients will be isolated and tested at the hospital.
Patients who have already been discharged will be followed by public health officials.
Before reopening the affected parts of the hospital, the “as soon as it is safe to do” is to be thoroughly cleaned.
Whitaker Hospital is in the East Auckland suburb of Henderson, and is one of the largest hospitals in Auckland.
The news is the second hit on Auckland hospitals after the Auckland City Hospital health worker, who had a positive experience earlier this week.
