Firefighters were called to the scene at 1:50 a.m. Wednesday to set fire to a large shed on State Highway 1 near Shaw.
The fire, which broke out early in the morning, is threatening to spread to several buildings in rural Horowinwa.
The Leon Fire Brigade was called to a property on State Highway 1, just north of Chao, after a fire broke out in a large shed at 1:50 a.m. Wednesday.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman Chris Dalton said a large number of fires were threatening to spread to several neighboring buildings, and a second alarm was sounded to bring in more firefighters.
The fire was eventually contained by four fire trucks and two water tankers.
Two fire trucks were still at the site, lowering the hotspot and watching for a possible blaze before 8 p.m.
Meanwhile, Wanganui firefighters responded to a house fire on Smithfield RD near Moore Avenue at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Dalton said the house was badly damaged before the fire was extinguished, but no one was injured.
In each case, they have seized it, despite obstacles we can scarcely imagine. “
