The man was at a star address Monday afternoon after violating his electronically monitored bail, police said.

Superintendent Jill Rogers said in a statement that the man was arrested and began behaving abnormally, becoming aggressive in the patrol car.

He said he tried to injure himself while in the detention unit and continued to misbehave.

He said police constantly monitored the man and put him in a restraining order for his own safety before he saw his condition worsen and asked a doctor.

The man was taken by ambulance to Middlemore Hospital, where his condition is critical.

Several investigations into the incident are ongoing and police have notified the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
