Two people have died after a car collided with a power pole in Henderson and another is in critical condition in hospital.
Police said officers spotted a speeding car on Henderson Valley Road at 12.38am and made a U-turn but did not activate the lights and siren.
Waitematā CIB Detective Inspector Kevin McIntyre said the vehicle drove along Henderson Valley Road some distance from the officers.
He said police found the vehicle, which had its lights off, collided with a power pole along Henderson Valley Road.
Officers tried to provide first aid but two people died on the spot.
Another is in critical condition and another is in stable condition at the hospital.
Henderson Valley Road is closed due to damaged power lines.
A scene with a serious crash unit has been inspected at the site, and the IPCA has been notified.
