A man dies after an incident at a police detention unit in Auckland

A 20-year-old man has died after an incident at a police detention unit in Auckland.

The man was later taken to Middlemore Hospital. Attempted to injure himself at the Manukau Custody Unit in South Auckland. On Monday, police said.

County Manukau District Commander Jill Rogers said he was arrested for violating the electronically monitored bail and “misbehaved” after his arrest.

Rogers said the man was arrested by police in the South Auckland town of Starr and showed “unusual behavior”, including being aggressive in a police car.

On Wednesday, police confirmed that the man had died Tuesday. Her relative has been notified.

Rogers said the Independent Police Conduct Authority has also been notified, and police are making sure there is on-site support for staff involved in the incident.
