A man dies in hospital after Auckland arrest – police

Police say a man who was taken to hospital died Monday after being placed in a restaurant chair in the Manuka Custody Unit.

The man, aged 20, was taken into custody on Monday afternoon for violating his electronic surveillance guarantee at the Itara address.

Police said he had misbehaved after his arrest and tried to injure himself in his cell in the detention unit.

Police said yesterday that he had to be kept in a restraining chair for his own safety during his detention.

The man was taken to Middlemore Hospital after his condition deteriorated.

The man died yesterday, police said.

His relative has been notified and several investigations into the incident are ongoing, police said.
