Members of the Railway Governance Group and III on Friday inaugurated the new Rotokori Transport Hub.
Hamilton has seen a significant drop in affordable housing with a 41% increase in the price of fleeing homes in the city since August 2018.
Over the next 25 years, Waikato will need about 70,000 additional homes.
Charles Ma, founder and chief executive of MED, said Rotokori North Development would alleviate the pressure.
“Rotokori North will be more than just a standard residential development – it’s about to become a real community, built for the long term and offering a truly better life,” Ma said.
“It’s important to have a good roof over your head, but it makes sense that we are all friends and neighbors in the community and people who care and encourage each other.”
Work is expected to begin in early 2022, and the entire development is expected to take five to seven years to complete.
Surrounding areas are of a rural and rural residential nature, with industrial and commercial areas of employment within a 5-7 minute drive, including The Base at Hamilton’s largest retail center.
