A man was taken to hospital in critical condition after an accident in New Plymouth on Thursday morning.
The main road from the north to New Plymouth was closed for only eight hours on Thursday morning after a serious accident.
In an emailed statement, police said the single-vehicle crash was reported around 1:35 a.m. Thursday.
A St. John’s spokesman said two ambulances were called to the scene and one man was taken to Taranaki Base Hospital in critical condition.
North Gate, State Highway 3, was closed until 9 a.m. as crews inspected the scene.
In a Facebook post, the Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency suggested road closures and expected delays for commuters in the area.
Emergency services and a serious crash unit are at the scene, the Post said.
Murray Chong, a nearby resident and New Plymouth District Councilor, said he had not heard of the crash, but had CCTV footage of it shortly before the crash.
“Certainly, speed was a factor,” Chong said.
