Police released footage of masked men who robbed a service station attendant at gunpoint.

Police have released footage of Balaklava men wanted in connection with the robbery, in which a petrol station attendant was held at gunpoint.

The tragic incident took place just before 10.20pm on Wednesday night at the Z Service Station on the corner of Carters and Himmat Road in Umberley, north of Christchurch.

Security footage shows masked men putting ducks under security tape at the entrance to a petrol station shop before entering.

Both men wore balaclavas during the robbery - although one did not cover his entire face.

The couple fled with cash and thousands of dollars worth of cigarettes.

Armed police cordoned off the area after the robbery but the culprits were not caught and fled on Thursday night.

The only attendant who was threatened with a gun “shook” but was not injured and will be out of work until next week.

Police said the robbers, who were wearing gloves, fled the petrol station with cash registers and cigarettes.

Police are investigating an armed robbery at the Z Umberley petrol station.

“Police are seeking help from the community to identify the men and are also interested in someone who was offered to sell cigarettes at the time of the robbery,” a spokesman said.

A spokesman for Z said the company was assisting police in their investigation.

Two masked men have not yet been arrested.
