Police searched for masked men who robbed a service station attendant at gunpoint.

Police are searching for two armed robbers who grabbed a Canterbury petrol station at gunpoint before fleeing with cash and a large quantity of cigarettes.

The tragic incident took place just before 10.20pm on Wednesday night at the Z Service Station on the corner of Carters and Himmat Road in Umberley, north of Christchurch.

CCTV footage shows masked men putting ducks under a security tape on the door of a petrol station shop before entering.

Both men wore balaclavas during the robbery - although one did not cover his entire face.

Armed police then cordoned off the area, but the culprits were not caught and are in large numbers.

The only attendant who was threatened with a gun “shook” but was not injured, and will be out of work until next week.

Police said the robbers, who were also wearing gloves in the incident, fled the petrol station with cash registers and cigarettes.

Detectives were examining security camera footage Thursday morning.
