Police say the man failed to stop at the first police signal and drove away instead.

Officers turned on their lights and sirens but immediately left the vehicle behind because the man was driving, a spokesman said in a statement.

The unit lost sight of the vehicle on Devon Road, which leads to Manora Road.

“Shortly afterwards, police arrived at a vehicle that had hit a concrete wall at the North Gate, from where staff last saw the vehicle.”

The driver was taken to hospital and is in critical condition.

Police believe two other people were in the car at the time of the accident and fled the scene before he could arrive.

Police want to hear from anyone who saw the 2006 Holden Commodore Saloon in the Tarnaki area at night or anyone who was in the area at the time of the crash.

Anyone with information is requested to contact event number P047863787 with reference to 105, or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Police investigation is ongoing.
