Firefighters in South Canterbury have been battling strong winds that have caused power outages and fires.
Strong winds have kept emergency services in the South Canterbury region busy with numerous reports of power outages and plant fires and power poles.
Throughout the area, fire and emergency New Zealand brigades have been called in for events related to Thursday evening.

The Alpine Energy website shows non-power outages at 36 locations around South Canterbury. Temaro seems to have survived the power outage.
The current known closures reported by Alpine Energy at 6 a.m. were:
Langley Downs, Rain Cliff, and Schippton, Kennington, and Cave, Middle Valley, Mount Michael, and Opoh, Arundel, T. Mawana, Trip Settlement, and Woodbury, Beautiful Valley, Hilton, and Cacaho, Holm Station, Otipora, and Pereira. , Esc Valley, Jackson Bush, Lyalldale, Ottawa, and St. Andrews, Blue Cliffs, Gordon’s Valley, and Pereira River R.D. Harrell, and Taekwondo, Arroyo, Hilton, Kakahu, Timoka, Vitohi, and Winchester.
“Strong winds blew over our rural block in Para West last night,” a resident told The Timero Herald.

A fire and emergency spokesman told the Temaro Herald that power lines were down and that “unintentional” fires had spread to dry fuel. There was also a small fire in a tree planting near the cave.
The incidents come after a severe wind warning was issued for Canterbury on Thursday by MetService.
