Vaikato DHB’s information system was targeted by a cyber attack on May 18, affecting Vaikato Hospital and other hospitals in the area.
About four months after being hit by the cyber-attack, the Waikato District Health Board will tell 4,200 people that their personal information has been leaked to the Dark Web.
The DHB said in a statement Friday that it was reviewing data posted on the Dark Web and intends to notify another group of about 42,200 people whose personal information has been disclosed.

The DHB said it took the incident very seriously and had contacted several government agencies, such as the Inland Revenue Department and Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency, to provide additional security to protect the affected personal information. Measures can be implemented.

Since the Ransomware event in May, Vykto DHB has been investigating what happened.
“As a result of these investigations, Vyakto DHB identified that a set of data was copied from outside its IT environment. This dataset has been exposed by a third party on the Dark Web.
“Vaikoto DHB has taken a detailed look at the affected dataset with the aim of verifying who and what personal information was affected.”
The DHB said the process took time and involved legal, confidential and medical experts who analyze the data to classify the types of personal information affected and to identify those involved.
DHB has been in touch with the Privacy Commissioner throughout the process.
