Cycling New Zealand has canceled the National School Road Cycling Championships to be held in Timaru on October 2-4.

“With the government’s latest update, the country has not been moved to Alert Level 1, we are sadly canceling the event,” CNZ said in a statement on Tuesday.

“We, as event organizers (and, we understand, many schools) were able to afford refundable costs this week.

“The government postponed its decision to move the alert level until next Monday and with the assurance that the conditions of this movement would be satisfied – it left us with no option but to cancel.

“We also keep in mind that there are still significant restrictions on the movement of Aucklanders at the moment, and large gatherings, which account for 56% of our enrollment numbers.”

The 2022 event will be held in Manawatu.
